34 - Grovesnor Square, W1

The devil is in the detail it seems and the detail never got more tempting than a perfectly cooked slab of rib eye. Skillfully charred on an amazing bespoke Argentinean charcoal grill just out of sight of your table in the open kitchen.

I could make reference to the charming relaxed service but it doesn’t matter; I could make reference to the stylish d├ęcor but I don’t really care about that kind of thing. When you have meat this well cooked they both kind of slip into obscurity!

Don’t judge me but I went for the 320g USDA Black Angus rib eye from Creekstone farms. I know sustainability this, local produce that but fuck it; when Americans do beef properly it can be exceptionally good!

Thankfully I was well rewarded for my sins. The rich deeply flavoured beef and smoky yet creamy fat went perfectly with the excellent house made barbecue sauce and easily places this as one of the best steaks I’ve had in London.

Other than the exceptional steak my starter of pan fried veal sweet breads with wild mushrooms and poached egg was well put together if a little average. The baked rice pudding with Yorkshire rhubarb was every bit as homely and delicious as it should have been though.

We drank a delicious little 2009 Primitivo from Puglia alongside the steak and started with a couple of glasses of the Louis Roederer Brut Premier as well as we were celebrating our birthdays. Start to finish, despite the average sweet breads, 34 delivered an exceptional meal with brilliant service and well worth every penny.

  1. I have to say, USDA approved steak is very, very good indeed. I think the best steak I have cooked at home was USDA rib eye.

    I feel like a traitor now.

  2. i've never been that enamoured with USDA meat over British breeds like Longhorn, but i'm ready to be convinced otherwise.

  3. Totally agree that the meat here is superb.....We tried a few cuts at 34, but the best by some distance was the Argentinian Bife de Lomo filet - it was amazing!
