The Hawksmoor Bar - Commercial Road, E1

Hawksmoor have quite successfully made a reputation for cooking some of the best steaks in London but I’d only ever eaten in the Seven Dials outpost before now.  Having seen a piece in TimeOut about London’s 100 best dishes I thought I’d make the effort to check out the Spitalfields branch as well.

The devil is in the detail it seems and the detail never got more tempting than a perfectly cooked slab of rib eye. Skillfully charred on an amazing bespoke Argentinean charcoal grill just out of sight of your table in the open kitchen.

Quite simply my favourite pop up of the year so far; Niall Davidson’s Beef Cartel is to meat eaters what crack is to junkies. From start to finish the evening was an absolute joy and I left stinking of meat and smoke.

La Grillade - Wellington Street, Leeds

You cannot beat classic French for a good meal and La Grillade is about as classic French as you can get. This bijou establishment has been on the Leeds food scene for many years and is a bit of a legend.
