I had the pleasure of going to the opening of the Daniel Johnston show last week at Protein on Hewett Street. Johnston, for those who don’t know, is an American artist and songwriter whose work has been popular in cult circles since the early 80’s.
Anyone of my age who loved the grunge scene will no doubt be aware of the album Hi, How are You? Made famous, in my mind at least, by Kurt Cobain’s support as he was often seen wearing Johnston’s t-shirts.
Whilst his music has always been on the radar I hadn't had much of an opportunity to see his art work before so this was a definite treat. Very colourful, often simplistic, and playful the pen and marker works are filled with characters taken from comic books, film, and the fantasy world conjured up in Johnston’s mind.
Alongside the art work was some fantastic food supplied by F.A.T. My stand out favourite of the evening was definitely the Captain America slider which was freaking delicious!
Juicy beef, French dipped bun, oozing rich cheese sauce, home-made pickle and all awesome. With the art, music, and food being washed down with some free Becks the evening was an absolute winner!
These works have never been exhibited before and are only on show till the 22nd of April so get down if you can!
