Brick Lane Bakery - Brick Lane E1

There’s something about a queue that makes me want to get involved... Just in case whatever is on the end of it is amazing and worth waiting for. Walking down Brick Lane at the weekend we got involved.

The Lady wanted a Salt Beef Bagel and we jumped into Brick Lane Bakery without giving it too much thought. If this many people are queuing it must be good surely?

Any way five minutes later and six pounds lighter in the wallet we left with our beef treats. What we’d been given though was a couple of bags of disappointment...

It was literally death by Salt Beef. Massive lumps of insipid beef overpowering the actually really rather good Bagel. No pickles, no love. Judging how busy it was though I'm hoping this was an off day.

  1. How incredibly disappointing. Whenever I walk past a queue snaking out of Greggs I always mutter under my breath how everything would be infinitely superior at an independent bakery. Seemingly not.

And you'd think that in the 15 years since London ditched the 071 dialling code, the cheap bastards would have bought a new sign!!

  2. I will defend the actual Bagel, it was a fine example of it's kind. The beef... not so good.

Also if the state of the sign brings you to despair I'd really not recommend going inside... the faded paper notices and antique shopfittings clearly haven't been touched for a good long time.

  5. The mistake you made was obviously going in during the day, salt beef beigel is a late night treat..

  6. Quite a few people have said it's better at night. I think I will have to come back ruined and give it a go!

  7. who cares about the sign & shop fittings u retards! Maybe if visual merchandising is that important go to Tesco? Salt beef is traditionally piled so high the sandwich is hard to pick up. That's how it is served in Katz's Deli in NYC, that's how it's served in Selfridges & they're the best SB sandwiches I've had to date

  8. Tesco isn't really a great example of visual merchandising is it? Do you want to try that one again?

  9. Dude, how can you even mention Katz's Deli and Tesco's in the same breath??

I will also leap to the defence of the humble BEIGEL (not bagel), this place is an East End institution and I mentioned it in a bit more detail on my site... as well as numerous other street food places in the Lane. Take a look for yourself here...
